We are 10 weeks into this school year and this is the first year that we have so far, managed to quell the colds (*knocks on wood, crosses fingers and does a little health dance*).  As a teacher, busy mom, graduate student and blogger, there is no time for sick in this household.  This year I decided to take some extra precautions for our family to #BeHealthyForEveryPartofLife.

Last year, I am confident that we spent the majority of the year fighting 20 different colds, the stomach flu, the regular flu and general allergy issues.  It was a very rough season for us.  I missed more work that I would have liked too, and my son missed a lot of school as well.  It seemed as though every time we were getting somewhat better, another cold snuck right in and took us all down again.  I definitely did not need a repeat this school year.
I did some research on germs in schools, to get a better idea of why last year was such a tough year for us and how we can get a better handle on our health this year.  The overwhelming amount of research pointed to prevention being key. In addition, an understanding that germs are spread much quicker in schools because of the close proximity and sharing of materials and common areas.  I know as a school teacher with 170+ students in and out of my classrooms that the door knobs, desks and other areas are not getting disinfected in between classes.  It is impossible to keep up on the large amount of germs that are circulating in our school buildings.
In an effort to try to stay healthy, I created a list of 10 germ prevention tips that you can use to help teach your children and remind yourself so that we can all hopefully avoid catching something.  It is a printable too, so please feel free to print it out and post it up!

In addition, I decided to create a family health basket with some of our essential items that this on-the-go family needs.  I headed over to Walmart and snagged a few items to add to our basket.

I purchased a few family favorites to both prevent and also help in case anyone starts to come down with something.
  • ChapStick Total Hydration:
    • We are a ChapStick family.  Colorado weather is harsh and drying so we need a moisturizing lip balm to smooth and moisturize. I liked that this option was 100% natural and had an advanced nourishing formula with argan oil and avocado butter and rosehip oils.
  • Centrum VitaMints:
    • This was a new item for our family, but I thought it looked good and I trust Centrum.  Plus the price point was great. The new Centrum VitaMints are adult multivitamins with a refreshingly minty taste you can take/enjoy any time of day with or without food or water. There is no chalky taste, just a cool mint flavor.
  • Infant’s Advil:
    • This is a staple in our house.  Our tiny girl is almost always the first to spike a fever and the only product we trust with her is Infant Advil.  Especially with teething still happening.  It provides up to 8 hours of fever/pain relief with just 1 dose and quickly soothes teething pain and fever.
  • Advil Tablet Vial:
    • The first symptom I typically get when a cold is onset is a headache and body aches.  Advil is our go to and I love these travel vials because they fit so easily in my purse.  Nothing’s stronger, longer lasting or better on your tough aches and pains than Advil, and nothing works on more pains that Advil (among OTC pain relievers).
  • Emergen-C Immune+ Chewables:
    • Teachers live on this.  We actually have drawers in our staff center stocked with Emergen-C Immune + Chewables to fight off those pesky germs.  They are great immune support that give us more healthy days and more healthy nights.

Once I had all my prevention and attack items, I gathered my supplies for our family health and wellness basket. You will need:

  • Pretty basket
  • Tissue paper
  • Printable of 10 tips
  • Curling ribbon
  • Healthy items like the ones listed above

I went to work, putting it all together, carefully placing the tissue paper in first, then the health & wellness items and finally, tying the tip printable to the basket handle.

This cold and flu season we are taking proactive steps, following my tips and focusing on prevention. I hope you do the same!  I have filled this basket and my purse with these essentials and so far our family is feeling great.
