My boy is 6 years old! SIX! I am trying to hold my tears back, but this week I have been spending more time soaking in these last years of childhood. I mean 6 years flew by and in 6 more he will be a preteen. I love celebrating birthdays with my kids. I love to throw fun themed parties because I know that in a few years these parties will be non-existent and instead filled with sleepovers and preteen stuff. So for now, I relish in the fun kid stuff, the parties. This year we went decided to go with a Super Mario themed swimming party and really have a good time.
I used my favorite program, Picmonkey and designed it using some images I found in a Google search. Then I printed them at Target as photos and boom 45 invites for under $10.00 done!
The party room that we reserved was an under the sea themed room. I knew that I really wanted to keep the focus with Super Mario, so I contacted my favorite decoration and party retailer, Oriental Trading, and got to work purchasing some decor and party supplies and designing the perfect Super Mario Party for my little guy.
The Super Mario Bros. collection is relatively limited in decor, but they had these great tablecloths at a fantastic price and of course the plates and napkins. I love the durability of these items and they always have better prices on these then if you purchased in a store. I also nearly purchased a Mario and Luigi costume for the husband and I to wear to carry the theme throughout the facility, but then I realized that it would be difficult to swim in a costume.
The husband and I decided to make silverware holders out of PVC pipe and green spray paint in the Super Mario theme! I think the turned out super cute and they only took a couple minutes to make. We just allowed them to dry overnight and boom; warp tube silverware holders.
One of my favorite things about Oriental Trading is their enormous selection of party favors and candy bar items. I can always find items to go with our party theme that I know our guests will love and at a great price too. At our daughters Frozen themed party earlier this year, we did a DIY treat sack station and it was a hit, so of course I carried that idea into our Super Mario party and it was wonderful.
I purchased the clear candy cylinders and filled them with some candy and non-candy items. I found the majority of my items on the Oriental Trading website. We purchased chocolate candies, bubble gum coins, star erasers, glow sticks and the most amazingly tasty blue raspberry licorice through Oriental Trading.
I made some printable labels that I used throughout the party with fun sayings and these little pop up mushrooms as stands. I also ran across some Super Mario pencils and tattoos at the last minute. The teacher in me loves to hand out pencils!
The buffet was great and the kids really loved being able to pick items and also snack a bit through the party. There was plenty for everyone and it was awesome to see the kids get excited and enjoy the sugar rush.
Food & Refreshments:
Initially we were just going to have cake and ice cream with some drinks, however, the party just happened to be in a BLIZZARD where the Denver area received a few FEET of snow. We decided if people were going to brave the weather, we were going to feed them. So we quickly called up our local pizza place and placed an order.
We also bought some water because the kids would be swimming and needing to rehydrate from all of that fun! However, fruit punch is always great to have, so we decided to make some to share as well.
My family loves Target cake and frosting and it just makes my life easier not to have to worry about baking. As always they did a fantastic job. The cake was enjoyed by everyone and although I completely forgot the candle, my mom was able to save the day so we could sing happy birthday to our guy!
Gifts are always a highlight for kids and this year our boy has an obsession with all things robots. So when he opened our gift he was elated. His friends and family spoiled him and we are so blessed with amazing people who love and support us.
The highlight of the party however, was not the presents or cake. It was the swimming and I am SO happy with the location we chose. It was very affordable, the pool is only a max of 4 ft deep which is great for Kindergarteners and their lifeguard staff is focused and impeccable. I also loved that they have life jackets on hand and fit the kids for them to help ensure water safety. It was really a great time and I know that my little boy adored his Super Mario Blizzard Swimming Party!
I could not have pulled this off without the help of Oriental Trading, so please make sure to check them out on their website, snag some deals yourself and enjoy every moment of building memories.
