5 Steps to An Easier Bedtime Routine #TheraBreathKids #ad

Last summer I was at my wits end with bedtime in our household.  Between the kids fighting me to go to bed and stalling and refusing to help pick up their messes, I was overwhelmed and frustrated.  I wanted bedtime to be a calming and loving time in our house and instead it was chaos.

We tend to start bedtime in our house around 7:15 pm, which seems early, but is actually perfect for us, since we are up and out of the house by 6:00 am on the weekdays.  After our chaos last summer, I broke down to a friend and she gave me some great ideas to make bedtime easier.  As we approach summer again, it is time for me to refresh our bedtime routine, and I plan to do it in just 5 easy steps.

1. Set a timer: This is my top advice to people.  We have timers set for everything.  It keeps us on schedule and makes bedtime fun by giving them a clock to race and get ready for bed.  I start our timer 15 minutes before we head upstairs to start our routine.  The first alarm on my phone goes off and that is my children's signal to wrap up whatever they are doing.  The second alarm is to head upstairs and get ready for baths.

    2. Warm baths with lavender: I am not a big proponent of essential oils, but I will say that I notice a huge difference when we have baths without any lavender and with.  I use the soap with lavender and it does make my kids calm down.  My kids get 10 minutes on the timer to get their baths done.

    3. Clean Fresh Start: In addition to taking baths, my kids play a race against the clock game to pick up the messes in their room each day.  My theory here is that it preps them to wake up in a clean fresh room with a great attitude and also helps mama out.  My kids also set out their clothes out for the next day, which makes our mornings go much smoother.  The timer here varies, but normally this only takes about 5 minutes.

    4. Dental Hygiene Routine:  After spending nearly $3000.00 on my sons mouth 2 years ago, this part was essential.  However, it was easily the hardest part of my routine.  It isn't that my kids do not like to brush their teeth, it is that they are not thorough about it.  However, I have come up with a solution to that!  While my kids are bathing, I lay out their supplies for brushing their teeth and then we set 3 timers.  A 2 minute timer for brushing, a 2 minute timer for flossing and a 1 minute timer for rinsing.  Now we have a little game and we hit all the major areas better.

    With that large dental bill we needed to add to more than just brushing to our routine.  Although timing helped, it was not enough to get in those tight crevasses.  We added in those easy flossers with animal characters on them, which they love.  In addition, after flossing they use TheraBreath oral rinse to take care of any areas that we might have missed.

Wind Down Time: I give my kids 5 minutes each night before they lay down to decide what they want to do to wind down.  My oldest loves to shoot hoops, my tiny girl prefers to get her baby dolls dressed for bedtime.  Once that is all over, they happily climb into bed, read a book and drift to sleep.
