Instant Pot Love

I have yet to post about my love of my Instant Pot.  You guys, I love it.  I bought it last year during the summer and basically it is a my go to kitchen appliance.  I cook with it 3-5 times a week and I am convinced that I can make anything in it.

One of the recipes I had to try were Cabbage Rolls that my grandma used to have during our Christmas celebrations.  It takes a few prep steps, but overall, they are so much easier to make then the typical way! Check out that easy recipe below and even more here

Easy Instant Pot Cabbage Rolls

I wish I could say you can just throw everything into the instant pot and it is ready in 5 minutes.  This recipe is easy, but does require you do a few things before you get those delicious cabbage rolls in the pot! First, you want to start by sautéing 1 TBS of butter, 4 cubes of chicken bouillon and 1 cup of water in the instant pot.

Broth for cabbage rolls

Once you have that going, steamed up cabbage leaves and rice.  I started two stove top pots while I was making the roux.  One as a steamer and the other to make the instant rice.  I have been told you can leave the rice raw and just combine it in the meat and it will cook in the IP, but personally, I am not ready to try that.

How to steam cabbage leafs

While sauteing and steaming those ingredients, prep the ground beef.  I used beef in this recipe but ground sausage works great too! To season the meat, mix the beef (uncooked) with some garlic salt and seasoning salt.  After steaming the rice, mix it in with the ground beef until it is a uniform mixture.

Once the cabbage leaves are softened, lay them on a plate and fill them with 2 TBS of the meat/rice mixture and then rolled them up.  It is best to make sure to tuck the sides in well so that the mixture does not spill out during the cooking process.  Once all cabbage rolls are prepared, place them into the instant pot  on the trivet.

I set the pot on manual, high pressure, for 5 minutes and let it do its magic.  If you plan on not steaming the rice ahead of time, I would adjust your cooking time.

When the alarm went off and the pot finished its natural pressure release, I opened the lid to find the perfectly cooked cabbage rolls, just the way I remember them from grandmas.

Thank you for this recipe! It’s very hard to find a cabbage roll recipe WITHOUT tomatoes or tomato sauce! My great grandmother always layered them sauerkraut when she cooked them. Would you suggest how I could do that in the instant pot? And did you ever try using uncooked rice? Thanks again for the recipe’

You are welcome. We had to cut the tomatoes out because they are too high in sugar for my diabetes. You can use the instant pot essentially the same as you would a slow cooker except for less time. I still steam the cabbage leaves so that I can wrap the cabbage rolls easily and then I layer them atop the trivet and cook on high pressure for 10 minutes with 1 cup of water at the bottom. I actually have not tried uncooked rice, but I would be that the IP would easily cook the rice in the cabbage stuffing.

The recipe looks good but I know my mother and granparents always had some kind of tomato sauce in the stuffing and cooking sauce. Maybe seasoned crushed tomato.

YES! We used to eat it with Tomato sauces as well! I had to cut them out for our family because they are too high in sugar and I am diabetic.
