Choosing to have Healthier Pets, Happier Lives™ #HillsTransformingLives

This post is sponsored by Hill’s Science Diet and the BlogPaws Pet Influencer Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about the Healthier Pets. Happier Lives.TM Campaign, but We Got the Funk only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. is not responsible for the content of this article.

It has literally been the month of veterinarian visits.  We have been to the vet every single week for the last month and that is okay with us.  After losing our Mia earlier this year to osteosarcoma, we really learned a lot about taking care of our aging pets and doing our best to keep them healthy and happy.

Mia was 9 years old when she died in April and it absolutely kills me to not have her sweet, excitable and loving soul around.  She was my first baby and will always be my girl.  When we got the puppy in July (on a whim folks, a crazy whim), we took her to the vet and they put us in the same room where just 3 months earlier I lain on the floor, holding my girl, apologizing and wishing that we could have done more. Cancer sucks. Knowing that your pets will not typically outlive you, sucks, but being a good dog parent doesn't suck and in fact is crucial to extending their longevity.

Lily is our 8 year old (tomorrow is her birthday) yellow lab.  She has a pedigree that is amazing and is AKC registered.  We lucked out getting her and she has truly just been a great dog.  Eight years is middle aged for our girl and we are starting to see some signs that she is getting older.  Her face has more white to it, she is growing fatty tumors and she is enjoying more time resting then she did just 3 years ago.

She has given us her fair share of veterinary emergent scares.  From the fatty tumors, to a massively crazy allergic reaction, to some dog bites from playing too hard with Mia over the past several years. Lily may be slowing down, but she is still very youthful, and that is how we hope to keep her.  It is so important to take our pets to the veterinarian for more than just those emergent visits.  The American Animal Hospital Association recommends yearly checkups and if you have a dog over the age of 7, to start taking them in for senior checks as well.  After this past year with our beloved, late Mia girl, we learned that our senior girl needs more focus and that we absolutely need to have a customized health and nutrition plan to keep her going.

Keeping her healthy and happy takes a village.  The family as a whole loves on her so much, that I occasionally worry that we are smothering the poor girl.  That is until she climbs up in our laps or paws at our hands for more loves.  Our veterinarian checks out our every concern and is quick to fit her in and take care of her health.  We focus on preventative care with our dogs and make sure they are up to date on shots, have heart worm medication, and have wellness checks every 6 months.  In addition, we have always been very specific and meticulous about the food and treats we feed our dogs.

Like I tell my students, food is energy, food is life, food is everything!  Just as humans make sure that we are feeding our body what it needs, as pet parents we also need to make sure that the food we feed our dogs is what their bodies need. Consistent, quality nutrition can help pets live happier and healthier lives. We feed both our girls Hills® Science Diet® and have since Lily was a pup.  Our dogs love the food and according to our vet, they are completely healthy and in shape.  I like Hills® because they also believe that our pets should live life to the fullest with quality nutrition and regular vet check ups.  That is why they are sponsoring the Healthier Pets, Happier Lives™program!
