Socially Driven: Exploring Denver #MBSociallyDriven #ad

I’m partnering with Mercedes-Benz to share my version of Colorado.

As a native Coloradoan, people are always asking about things to do and see in Denver.  I have so many places that I could share with you as I have seen a large majority of the state and I have been to nearly every major park here.  My parents loved taking road trips when we were kids and I have some incredible memories of growing up in this amazing state.

I am a mom, so my Instagram is full of our life as a family and my life as a teacher.  I had to narrow down so many photos that I wanted to share to just 5 on the socially driven app, but I figured I would share a few more here!  Take a peek at our little journey's through our home state.

Picture 1: Water World

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

Few people know that we have a wonderful water park in Colorado with an incredible amount of water slides, pools, kid areas and food.  Every single time we go to Water World, we have an amazing time!

Picture 2: Denver Zoo

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

I have been to a few other zoo's in the nation and I am proud to say that the Denver Zoo located close to the heart of the city is phenomenal.  They continue to do amazing things for the wildlife and visitors and the zoo itself is beautiful.  We are members and spend a lot of our time there.

Picture 3: Casa Bonita

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

True Coloradoans know that Casa Bonita is not a place to eat.  You only go for the cliff diving, shows and sopapillas.  It is a fun time for sure and something that anyone that is visiting needs to experience...even just for a little laugh.

Picture 4: The Rocky Mountains

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

We are a state known for our amazing views and these stunning Rockies.  We live about 50 minutes from the mountains and tend to spend a lot of time exploring different areas for fishing, hiking and ATVing.  Often our family also just loves to hang with the wildlife, watching elk, bison, ducks and any other critter that wants to share their space with us.

Picture 5: Ice Fishing

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

Ice fishing is big in this state and something that is very fun to do.  My husband and son love to spend a day on the ice, catching fish and enjoying the catch later for dinner.  Fishing in Colorado is hard to beat.

Narrowing down Colorado to just 5 photos was difficult, but I went with a couple that I just had to share with my readers and followers.  Colorado to me is family.  It is life and it is home.  I cannot imagine this place without family, pets, scenery and our skating rink.

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

Colorado has some of the best ATV trails and we spend a lot of our summer exploring these.  You can find Colorado gear all over and we wear a lot of it here!  The snow is something that you just have to experience.  Our dogs love to be out frolicking during a big storm.  The sunsets and sunrises here are just breathtaking.  Even after 30+ years I am still awestruck by them.  Finally, if you are looking to get some roller skating in, you need to check out one of the most unique and amazing skating rinks in the Nation.  Wagon Wheel Skate Center is an all wood floor with sequoia trees as building supports with so much nostalgia, that you just have to visit to really see how awesome this place is.

Now that you have seen Colorado through my eyes, what's YOUR version of Denver? If you live in or plan on visiting NYC, LA, Chicago, Austin, Miami, or Denver, Mercedes-Benz is inviting you to share your city in a simple and artistic way on Instagram. It's easy—you create a quick (but beautiful) animated album of 5 of your best geotagged photos and upload it to Instagram. Then, you share your album on your feed with the hashtag #MBsociallydriven—and your photos might be featured on the Mercedes-Benz website!

Ready to rediscover your city?

Stage Images Dance Studio The Next Generation NOW OPEN!

I grew up in dance and cheerleading. Even though I always assumed I would have boys, when our little girl came along, I knew immediately that I wanted to get her into dance as soon as she was ready.  I was elated when my old dance studio reopened and enrolled our princess.

Stage Images Dance Studio originally opened in 1986 and served Brighton, Colorado and surrounding areas for 13 very successful years.  I actually danced for Julie (the owner) both as a tot and worked with her throughout her tenure as our dance coach in high school.  Julie was instrumental in my life as a youth and I was very excited to have her impact my own children the same way.

I enrolled the tiny princess in the 3/4 year old ballet and tap dance and we started at the beginning of February.  Currently, Stage Images Dance Studio is utilizing temporary facilities until they acquire their own building, but Julie has found a great temporary home in one of the local and centrally located elementary schools.

The ballet and tap class an an hour and consists of the students doing stretches and warming up and then learning a little bit of their performance routine each class.  Julie really focuses on making sure that the students learn not only the motions but also the correct vocabulary while keeping an upbeat, organized and fun classroom.

At the halfway point in class the students switch into their tap shoes (Julie has the kids learn a bit of independence and teaches them to change their own shoes) and then they begin working on their tap skills.

Parents are welcome to peek in on the class as they practice, they are just not allowed into the room so as not to disrupt.  Julie however, does an amazing job keeping the little ones focused and on task the entire hour.  It truly flies by for both students and parents and is really a joy to watch.

They also prepare a tap routine and work on the skills needed to put on a great little performance in the coming months. At the end of each class, Julie pulls each student aside individually and gives them some positives from class and sometimes gives them one thing to work on for the next class and then gives the students stickers for their hard work.

In the last month our little girl is already improving in her dance abilities drastically.  She is really enjoying class and loves showing her friends and family her skills.

I highly recommend Stage Images Dance Studio if you are in Brighton Colorado or the surrounding areas.  They are EXTREMELY affordable and the communication is fantastic.  They offer classes for all ages and levels in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Contemporary.  It is easy to register and everything is accessible online through their parent portal.  We are so happy with our decision to enroll the princess and are excited to see where this journey takes us!

Please check Stage Images Dance Studio out on on their website and register today.  You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Upcycled Sanity Saver #ChickFilAMomsDIY

So yesterday, I was so excited to have everything packed and ready for school and work the night before.  I am normally rushing through the morning and I did not even think that I should check the weather.  Sent the kids and myself on our way with light rain coats, no gloves, and no hats.  It snowed, like a blizzard as school was letting out and well, I realized I need something to save my sanity.
Sanity Saver, ChickFilA Chicken Tortilla Soup Upcycle, ChickFilA Container crafts, #ChickFilAMoms, Ideas for recycling plastic containers, Ideas for busy parents, compact containers

That scenario is one that often happens in my life.  I do my best to be clean and organized so much so that I often forget the little things that help keep me sane.  My truck is cleaned out all the time and of course when I need something, I had in there two days ago, it is already at home and put away (remember, everything has its place).  So I decided to help save my own sanity and create this little upcycled, mobile sanity saver, that fits perfectly in the center console of my truck!

Sanity Saver, ChickFilA Chicken Tortilla Soup Upcycle, ChickFilA Container crafts, #ChickFilAMoms, Ideas for recycling plastic containers, Ideas for busy parents, compact containers

I grabbed a Chick-Fil-A Chicken Tortilla Soup container, some washi tape and stickers for decoration and then collected items that I am constantly searching my car for.  Kleenex, hand sanitizer, hair ties, nail file, safety pin, bandaids, super glue, batteries, pain relievers, and a Chick-Fil-A gift card because food is life.

I think went to work, covering the lid of the soup container with washi tape.  This took all of 5 minutes.

Next I used some old scrapbooking stickers to add the words "Sanity Saver".  In hindsight, I would have rather used my Silhouette to make vinyl words that were a bit prettier, but I was doing this quickly and grabbed what I had.

Then I filled up my soup container with my necessities.  They fit perfectly and even had extra room for other items.  I might add some bobby pins, chapstick and fruit snacks for the kids later.

I put the lid on and called it good.  The Sanity Saver now sits happily in my center console of my truck ready to be used...oh wait, I already used the tissues this morning, because runny noses happen when mom forgets it is going to snow.  See, useful already!

Happy Friday Friends!  Have you upcycled a container like this before?

Life's Little Updates

Depression has its ups and downs.  These last couple weeks have been a whirlwind of those.  There are days that I wake up and I am ready to face the day.  I get showered and dressed and I attack the day head on.  Yesterday was one of those days.  I worked a full day and came home and cleaned my entire house, did laundry, cooked and spent time with my sweet babies.

Then there are days like today.  Today, I didn't want to get dressed.  I didn't want to face the demands of the day.  My students needs didn't seem important.  My own children's education was not something I cared to worry about.  All I wanted to do was sleep off this depression.  Still I pushed through and I am at work, teaching, my kids are off to school and I am procrastinating with grading.

The thing is, I am not actually sad about anything in particular.  Nothing friends.  I am just overall having a day that I feel off.  These come and go and somedays they are overwhelming, but I am learning that dwelling in that is not healthy for me.  I have to get up and I have to get going.

It is probably the weather change here in Colorado.  Beautiful weather yesterday and then gloomy skies and cold today.  Maybe it is that I constantly feel tired and I pretty much gave up coffee. Maybe it is the 10 extra pounds that I just can't get rid of that are exhausting to carry around.  Maybe I just need a personal day.  I don't really know, but I do know that today is not my day, but that doesn't mean that I just give up.

I have been reflecting a lot on the turmoil of last year in our lives.  I was doing our taxes and was in shock at how truly lucky we were to make it through last year and still so blessed that we were able to provide a safe, comfortable life for our kids.  On days like today, I remind myself that everyone is physically healthy, we have a beautiful loving home, we have food, we have careers that we both truly enjoy, we have each other.  Yup, that last one.  I do not need anything else, just those people.

On another note, the dog is a profession tripod.  She is recovering so well and is starting to become more playful and silly again.  She had her staples out last week and the vet says she has healed well. We won't know if the cancer has actually spread until well, we know.  At this point, we have taken away her massive tumor and pain and we have our pup back (minus all that hair lol) and she is definitely back.  She is stealing the kids food, begging for ice cube treats, enjoying being outside and wandering around, trying to go in the car every chance she gets and eating up all the belly rubs and snuggles she could ask for.  Dog life is good.

Even with 3 legs, she will not stop moving...blurry photos for days

Marriage life is good.  We have spent more time together and are communicating more.  We are still working on us, but truthfully I finally feel like we are both leaning on each other for strength and are becoming that strong unit that our family needs.  I love this man, he loves me and we are going to get through all of this.

The kids are amazing.  Our oldest is kicking butt in school and has the sweetest heart.  His teacher shared with me that he is honest and sweet with a cute little story (too long to share here).  He has been working on pushing off when he is roller skating and is currently obsessed with Stampy Cat and DanTDM on Youtube and Minecraft, although Lego's are a close second.

A post shared by Laura Funk (@toxict15) on

The peanut is challenging.  She has a lot of opinions right now.  She truly thinks that she can just tell us what to do and we should listen and she is always full of an excuse.  Those excuses led to her toys being bagged up because "it was too much to clean up".  She will earn them back, but for now we are learning lessons on listening when asked the first time.

Cheese!  Crazy hair don't care

She still dresses up in all the costumes and princess dresses all the time and when I ask her questions her answer is now "Probably, yes."  She is also taking dance classes (OMG I CANNOT WAIT TO SHARE THIS POST BTW), and is doing really well.  She really likes it and practices at home and shows her daddy all her dance moves.

Prima Ballerina!
So, what I am saying is that even if you are battling this depression demon, try to reflect on the goodness and happiness.  Try to find the good in something daily and create your purpose.  Love to you all!

3 Ways to Keep your Marriage a Priority while TTC #GetCloserWithStorkOTC #Spon

“This is a sponsored conversation from Mums the Word Network and The Stork OTC. All opinions are my own.”

Sixteen years together, nine years married, four pregnancies, two angels and two rainbows and here we are, still working on our marriage.  The early years were tough, especially while we were trying to conceive and making your marriage a priority is so important through those trying times.
Marriage Advice, 3 Ways to help your marriage when trying to conceive, trying to conceive and marriage, marriage advice for trying to conceive
Our story of trying to conceive is one of heartbreak and happiness.  Shortly after we were married, we found out we were expecting...unexpectedly.  We naturally told everyone thinking nothing of the baby miscarrying.  My mother-in-law was the most excited as she had just gotten a terminal diagnosis a few weeks earlier.  She told us, “Now I have something to hold on for!”.  We were so happy and that lasted a good 10 days.  Then tragedy struck and we now knew the meaning of “angel baby”.  Un-telling everyone was awful, but it broke us to un-tell my mother-in-law.  We started immediately trying to have another baby.  Nothing seemed to work.  Ten months later, we were bedside with my mother-in-law saying our final goodbyes.  We asked her to look over our angel baby and to send him or her back to us if she could.  A few days later, I found out I was pregnant.

The pregnancy itself was hard.  I had morning sickness so bad that I was throwing up all the time and I even threw up on the superintendent of schools accidentally (she was coming to check out our new building and I was rushing to the bathroom and well it happened; not my finest moment). I ended up with pre-eclampsia that was not well monitored at 31ish weeks and had a terrifying labor and delivery culminating in an 18-hour labor, c-section, no memory of the birth or much leading up to that, failing kidneys, a beautiful baby in the NICU who would not breath and myself clinging to life.  Through everything, I didn’t care.  We had our rainbow baby and he was perfection.
Marriage Advice, 3 Ways to help your marriage when trying to conceive, trying to conceive and marriage, marriage advice for trying to conceive
I spent the next two years focusing on this baby, forgetting that my husband had lost his mother, nearly lost his wife and his son and was not handling life well.  Naturally, I wanted another baby, and although he was not super ecstatic to try again, we did.  This time we took the attitude of “if it happens, it happens”, and it did!  Sadly however, this little baby had a heart condition and did not survive past 14 weeks gestation.  We broke into two separate people, trying to handle so much grief and instead of coming together we grew further apart.

Somehow still, we ended up trying again and were blessed after 6 months of trying with our second rainbow baby.  Her pregnancy and delivery were a million times different than our son’s.  I still had morning sickness, but not nearly as bad.  I had a great planned c-section delivery with an amazing recovery and really felt so blessed.
Marriage Advice, 3 Ways to help your marriage when trying to conceive, trying to conceive and marriage, marriage advice for trying to conceive

Life seemed perfect, but as you might well have guessed, it was far from it.  Our marriage was crumbling and I was so focused on being a great mom, that I let if fall apart.  Reflecting back, I can attribute some of this to our time trying to conceive and the miscarriages that we had.  I was very reclusive and somewhat angry when we would lose the baby.  I took a lot of that out on him, forgetting that he too lost a child.  Trying to conceive the babies were work and each month that we came up negative, was another month full of anguish and a grumpy wife.  This poor man was doing the best he could to make me happy, without getting a chance to talk about his feelings.  I just hate myself for how those years went.

This is exactly why I wanted to share with you 3 ways that you can keep your marriage a priority and nurture your spouse while you are trying to conceive.

  1. Communicate:  This is a basic marriage skill.  However, through the ups and downs of TTC, you will need to communicate clearly about what you need.  Do not take your anger or frustration out on your spouse, simply because you cannot find the words to express your feelings.  You CAN find those words, so use them and allow your spouse to have their time too.  Put away those devices, take time each night to look at each other, touch and discuss your needs, your achievements, your goals and your frustrations.
  2. Take the Focus off the goal: Putting so much stress on the best positions, the right timing, the failures and everything that goes with TTC, does nothing good for the real intimacy that a marriage needs to be successful.  Enjoy the time you two have to be intimate, stop focusing on what you are trying to achieve and focus on the two of you.  Both times we had successful pregnancies, we were finally to a place where we had stopped “trying” and started enjoying.  Boom, babies.
  3. Research: I was a young mom-to-be, and although I can talk about sex and babies, I knew nothing about the resources out there to help take some of the stress of tracking ovulation and the options to help you have better success.  I thought that you just go off birth control, wait until day 14 of your cycle, have sex for a few days and hope for the best.  I never used those ovulation tracking kits, or talked with a doctor about how to be more successful or looking into options for at-home devices to help with getting pregnant.  Instead, I just stressed my husband and myself out more and more each month waiting for that positive test.  Had I been more educated in this department, I think that it would have really helped our relationship.  Also, I would include your spouse in the research process, that way you can both decide which options you are comfortable with and willing to try.

Marriage Advice, 3 Ways to help your marriage when trying to conceive, trying to conceive and marriage, marriage advice for trying to conceive

One of those at-home medical devices that could be an option for you and your spouse is the Stork OTC.  This is a insemination kit used during ovulation while trying to get pregnant. You can pick one up over the counter at Walgreens or CVS pharmacies in the family planning section next to the ovulation test kits.  I wish that I would have known about this device and discussed the use of it with my husband.  Maybe we would have not had such a hard time getting pregnant with our rainbows.

If you are interested in more information about the Stork OTC, then please join me on Twitter, February 23rd at 8PM EST.  You can follow the conversation and chime in by using the hashtag #GetCloserWithStorkOTC.  I really hope to meet some of you there and have some honest and amazing conversations!

I am happy to close this post out with some positivity and light.  Sixteen years ago, I met this man, I fell in love and we created 4 beautiful lives.  We have made it through those struggles and we are doing a lot better.  I know things could have been easier through our journey and I am thankful that we have those experiences to share with other couples to give them hope, information and camaraderie.

5 Reasons you and your baby NEED a DockATot #sponsored

Disclosure: We were provided with a DockATot in exchange for our honest review.

Four month sleep regression is real, but now manageable after the DockATot made its way into my sister's home.  After her success, we wanted to share 5 reasons that you and your baby NEED a DockATot!

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

Before I jump into our list, I want to tell you a bit about my sister and nephew's story.  When my nephew was born he was the perfect baby.  He slept great, only woke to ate and went straight back to sleep.  He woke infrequently and was hardly ever fussy.  In fact, the only time that I remember in his short life of him ever being inconsolable was when I was babysitting him and I took off my coat to get comfortable before giving him a bottle, and he was not having that bottle because he thought I was going to nurse him.  Like I said, he is just a perfect baby.

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

At almost 4 months, my sister went back to work and shortly there after, my nephew began the dreaded 4 month sleep regression.  It was awful for her.  He would wake every 30-40 minutes and scream and then finally sleep for a short period and repeat.  He has always been a cat napper, so making up that sleep for mom, dad and baby during nap time was not happening and my sister and her husband were exhausted and burning the candle at both ends.  They tried to transition my nephew out of the rock n' play that he had been sleeping in and into his crib, and it was a mess.  Nothing was working...until the DockATot came into their lives.

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

This was a game changer.  My nephew was so used to sleeping in a conforming little space that the wide open crib was too much for him.  He was too big for the rock n' play and uncomfortable in it, yet too small to feel secure in the crib.  Placing the DockATot in the crib and allowing him to sleep in it, made the transition from cradle to crib much easier on both parents and baby.  In addition, he finally started sleeping a normal stretch within just a couple days of using the DockATot.  Life is so much better, sleep is so much better and that happy little nephew nugget is back!

So onto our list of WHY you NEED a DockATot!

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

1. The fabric is amazing. It is strong and soft at the same time.  In addition, DockATot has worked to ensure that the fabric is 100% breathable and safe for use in cribs.  The material that it is made out of allows air to pass through and keeps baby at a comfortable temperature which is relaxing and helps them sleep better.  My sister definitely agrees that this is a wonderful feature!

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

2. The material is washable!  No seriously, in the short 4 year span since I had a tiny baby to now, you would not believe how many baby items were so difficult to take apart and wash.  The DockATot is so simple to take apart, and wash in the washer.  As a mom, you know how blowouts and messes happen and how important it is to get that in the washer quickly.  We love that you can easily take everything apart and get it in the laundry fast.

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

3. Safe Secure Sleeping.  Look, babies like to be snuggled and held tight.  We all know a baby who only wanted to sleep in your arms and woke up as soon as you put them down.  The DockATot reinvents the womb providing a snug and soothing environment for babies which helps them sleep well.
DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

4. Hugely versatile.  Not only does the DockATot provide a great sleeping environment, but you can use the DockATot for playtime under a kick-mat, or for safe co-sleeping, or even to promote tummy time and head control!  This is truly a wonderful baby product and something that we believe is really a game changer.

DockATot Review, DockATot testimonial, DockATot video, DockATot features, Reasons to buy a DockATot, Is a DockATot worth the money

5. Eases cradle to crib transitions.  This is one of the best features for my sister.  She really feels that my nephews sleep patterns nearly returned to normal once the DockATot arrived.  Their transition was much easier for everyone and particularly gave my nephew a secure and comfortable place to snooze with ease.

We wanted to show you some more features and I wanted to show off this cute baby some more, so here is our video review of the DockATot.  Let us know if you have any questions!

If you want more information on the DockATot, please check out their website, which is full of sleep safety and strategies for all parents.  Also you can contact them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Disclosure: I was provided with a free canvas in exchange for my honest review

I am just starting to get into making a focus wall in my house and with that, I wanted to include canvas.  It is going to take me some time to put the entire wall together, but I did want to share with you this awesome company and the quality of their canvas.

Canvas On Sale Free print, Canvas on Sale review

The canvas shipped quickly and was great quality.  I really inspected every angle out because I truly wanted to make sure that this was a quality canvas before I committed to purchasing any more.  The seams were perfect and very strong.

Canvas On Sale Free print, Canvas on Sale review

I was worried that the canvas would make my photos look to pixilated and honestly the print turned out wonderful!  Although close up it does look a little pixilated, hanging on a wall the photo looks stunning.

Canvas On Sale Free print, Canvas on Sale review

Speaking of hanging on the wall, the canvas is so light that you can hang it with a simple thumb tack. I love that because I am one that likes to put small holes into the walls and use little effort to hang decor.

I am really happy with the quality and the quick shipping and will definitely be ordering more in the future.  I cannot wait to get my focal family wall up and feature our family photos over the past several years!
